Location 5: Wellington, New Zealand

Windy Wellington

The most remote capital city in the world, Wellington charms visitors with a laid-back style and a great quality of life. Located on the southern end of New Zealand's north island, Wellington features mild climates with great sightseeing. Enjoy a ride on the cable car to see the views, or find a rugby match at Westpac stadium. Film fans will enjoy seeing the locations used in King Kong and The Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

Location 4: Kyoto, Japan

Japan's Cultural Capital

Formerly the capital of Japan, Kyoto is home to the second largest collection of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the world. From historic temples to relaxing gardens, Kyoto's slow pace keeps visitors at ease despite large summer crowds. Even video gamers will appreciate Kyoto, as it is the headquarters to Nintendo. No matter who you are, the romance and peace of this Japanese paradise will win you over.

Location 3: Tehran, Iran

A Persian Paradise

Tehran may take some getting used to, but it provides an interesting perspective on its place in the world. Located in the heart of the Middle East, the land we now know as Iran was once the center of the great and powerful Persian empire. Artifacts of this great age can be seen in Tehran at Iran's National Museum, or check out one of the world's most impressive collection of jewelry at the National Jewels Treasury. The Azadi Tower is a must-see as well. The views of the country's leader aside, Iran is a unique and intriguing destination.

Location 2: Casablanca, Morocco

Arabian Africa

Formerly a French Colony, Casablanca is rich in both culture and history. The city itself maintains its Arabic roots with such structures as the King Hassan II Mosque, yet has a modernized Western feel to it as well. Enjoy the sunny beaches or coastal views, as Casa sits on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. Enjoy modern Arabic cuisine, coffee, and culture in one of Africa's top tourist destinations!

Location 1: Reykjavik, Iceland

Iceland's Natural Beauty
Reykjavik, Iceland's largest city, is a hidden European gem. The city is completely accessible by bicycle and serves as a gateway to some of the world's most gorgeous landscapes. Relax in a natural hot spring or head out into the country to enjoy the Northern Lights. Either way, Iceland has something for everyone!

Spotlight On: The Blue Lagoon
One of the things I'm looking forward to on my trip is swimming in Iceland's blue lagoon. It is only 20 minutes from the airport, and costs anywhere from 33 Euro (around 43 American dollars) to several hundred dollars depending on what type of experience is desired. There is a full restaurant there for food (LAVA is the name,) and there are many other massage and spa related packages to experience as well.

The lagoon is actually filled with geothermal water from a nearby heating plant, and mixes with natural silica and sulfur to give the lagoon its bluish hue. Icelanders claim that the lagoon has healing properties, and can heal some skin disorders. Attached to the lagoon is a research facility that studies the effects of the lagoon's water on human beings. Overall, it is a relaxing spot to enjoy a warm dip in the water!

Travel Blog Introduction

TeacherGroettum Travels!

Starting on May 21, 2013, and ending on July 31, 2013, my students and I are going to take a trip around the world! For my trip, I focused on places that I've never been, but that I've always wanted to go to. From Iceland to Iran, the places I'm visiting are rich in culture and natural beauty, yet not the traditional "around the world" destinations. Here are the stops I plan on making on this journey: Reykjavik, Iceland, Casablanca, Morocco, Tehran, Iran, Kyoto, Japan, and Wellington, New Zealand.
